Fender Panel Removal

MARINE ENGINEERING | PROJECT MANAGEMENT | STRUCUTRAL ASSESSMENT | SPECIALIST MARINE CONSTRUCTION

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Simpson Coulson delivered the specialist removal of a severely damaged marine fender panel at Navigator Terminals’ Jetty 4 facility in Seal Sands, Teesside.

Following a vessel impact during berthing operations, the jetty’s downstream fendering system sustained substantial structural damage, compromising its ability to safely accommodate vessel movements.

Simpson Coulson was engaged to assess the extent of the damage, undertake engineering evaluations and develop a safe, coordinated solution for removing the damaged fender assembly.

EXPERTISE

The project involved a complex marine lifting operation using a 300-tonne mobile crane positioned on the foreshore, supported by specialist rope access operatives, diving provision, marine safety teams and carefully sequenced cutting and lifting activities.

COLLABORATION

Working within the constraints of an operational marine terminal, Simpson Coulson coordinated the engineering, specialist subcontractors, construction methodology and site operations to successfully deliver the removal works.

ENGINEERING CHALLENGE

Navigator Terminals’ Jetty 4 is a critical marine asset supporting vessel berthing operations at its North Tees facility. Following an impact involving a vessel, the downstream fendering system suffered extensive structural damage.

A subsequent engineering inspection identified significant deformation of the steel fender panel, damage to the supporting chain assemblies, a sheared lower fender cone, missing protective face pads and deformation of supporting steelwork.

The extent of the damage rendered the affected fender unsafe for continued use and reduced the jetty’s operational berthing capacity.

Positioned over tidal water, restricting conventional access
Heavy lifting equipment operating from the foreshore
Connected to the jetty through damaged chains and fixings
Rope access and diving activities required specialist arrangement
Controlled disconnection required to prevent movement
Works had to be coordinated within operational environment
